Metric? Dimension? Social Media? What is the correlation?

Hello everyone,

Beginning the journey to learn about Database Marketing in the Social Media context. Today we are going to be talking about metrics and dimensions for Google Analytics and the applicability of these concepts to other internet tools.

What are metrics and what are dimensions?

Let us begin with the concepts. Then we will discuss about tools that you can use on the social media realm that are related to concepts of metrics and dimensions.

So concepts:

1) Metrics

A metric is a measurement. It can be visit, pages/visit, average time on a site, new visit, bounce rate and many other types of measurements that can display numbers about the connection between a user and a website.

2) Dimension

Dimension describes the attributes. For example the city or region from where the visit is originated, the source that referred the visit, the browse used for the visit and many other qualitative characteristics that can describe the features of the visit.

Applicability

The use of these two concepts together are very powerful for Database Marketing because we can have the number and the attributes of any internet visit. For instance we can know how many people using Google Chrome and from Canada have visited a website. Thinking in terms of Marketing it would beneficial to have this data if you are launching a new app based on Google Chrome in the Canadian Market.

Social Media

In the realm of Social Media these concepts can be expanded and you can have other kind of metrics: For instance in Facebook the metrics can also be the number of likes a person have in a comment, The number of pictures and videos that have been posted, the number of comments that have been made in a post, the number of people who have seen a comment and much more. The dimensions would be the city from where are the persons who have seen or commented a Facebook update, also their gender, their age and even their names. Facebook can analyze all the characteristics of it users to optimize it marketing products (Facebook ads) and the users general experience on this website.

Blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, About.me and Pinterest are a few of the Social Medias that can use the same concepts of Metrics and Dimension regarding their data as well. A few tools such as Tweetdeck, Hootsuite and Klout can help you to gather this data as well. Explanations about these tools will be in a next post. Have a great journey!
